引用部分は大文字・小文字のどちらで始めるの？

引用部分は、センテンス（文）として引用する場合は大文字で始めます。フレーズ（語句）として引用する場合は小文字で始めます。

センテンスとして引用する場合：

○ In his speech, he said, “We made a fatal mistake.”

× In his speech, he said, “we made a fatal mistake.”

フレーズとして引用する場合：

○ In his speech, he said that we had made a “fatal mistake.”

× In his speech, he said that we had made a “Fatal mistake.”

＊センテンスとして引用する場合でも、引用文の間に発言者などを挿入するときは、後半を小文字で始めます。

○ “Without your help,” the president said, “we would have failed.”

× “Without your help,” the president said, “We would have failed.”
